Install DDL Expander for your organization
For Microsoft 365 administrators. It takes about 5 minutes, and the add-in can take up to 24 hours to reach users.
Before you begin
- You need a Microsoft 365 tenant with Exchange Online. On-premises Exchange Server is not supported.
- You need to sign in as a Global Administrator, which is required to grant consent in step 6. An Exchange Administrator can upload and assign the add-in, but a Global Administrator must still complete the consent step.
- Supported clients are Outlook for Windows (desktop) and Outlook on the web. Outlook for Mac resolves dynamic distribution lists natively and doesn't need the add-in. iOS and Android are not supported.
Manifest URL:
https://addin.ddlexpander.com/manifest.xml
Steps
1. Open the Microsoft 365 admin center
Go to admin.microsoft.com and sign in with your admin account.
2. Go to Settings → Integrated apps
In the left navigation, select Settings, then Integrated apps. If you don't see Settings, select Show all first.
3. Select Upload custom apps
At the top of the Integrated apps page, select Upload custom apps.
4. Provide the manifest URL
- For App type, choose Office Add-in.
- Choose Provide link to the manifest file.
- Paste
https://addin.ddlexpander.com/manifest.xmland select Validate. - Once validation passes, select Next.
5. Assign users or groups
Choose who gets the add-in:
- Just me, to try it yourself first.
- Specific users/groups. We recommend this: start with a pilot group, then widen access.
- Entire organization.
Your subscription is billed per seat, so assign only the people who need it. You can change the assignment later.
6. Review permissions and grant consent
Review the permissions DDL Expander requests. It needs to read distribution list membership so that it can show members in Outlook. Select Accept permissions and sign in as a Global Administrator to consent for your organization. DDL Expander does not store distribution list members or mail content. For details, see our Privacy Policy.
7. Finish deployment
Select Finish deployment, then Done. DDL Expander now appears in your Integrated apps list with status Deployed.
8. Tell your users
Within 24 hours, assigned users will see DDL Expander in Outlook when they read or write a message. They may need to restart Outlook for Windows or refresh Outlook on the web.
Troubleshooting
"Upload custom apps" is missing or greyed out
Your account doesn't have the required role. Sign in as a Global Administrator or Exchange Administrator.
The manifest URL fails validation
- Check that the URL is exactly
https://addin.ddlexpander.com/manifest.xml, starts withhttps://, and has no trailing spaces. - Open the URL in a browser. You should see an XML file. If it doesn't load, your network may be blocking addin.ddlexpander.com.
Users don't see the add-in in Outlook
- Deployment can take up to 24 hours.
- Have users restart Outlook for Windows or sign out and back in to Outlook on the web.
- In Integrated apps, select DDL Expander and check that the user, or a group they belong to, is assigned.
- Make sure the user's mailbox is in Exchange Online, not on-premises.
- Make sure the user is on a supported client. Outlook for Mac, iOS, and Android are not supported.
A sign-in window closes immediately or never appears (Outlook on the web)
Allow pop-ups for outlook.office.com and addin.ddlexpander.com, then try again.
"Need admin approval" or a consent error
Consent wasn't completed. In Integrated apps, open DDL Expander and accept the pending permissions as a Global Administrator.
"Contact your administrator to assign a license."
The user isn't covered by your subscription. Check their assignment in Integrated apps and make sure you have enough seats.
"DDL Expander requires an internet connection."
DDL Expander always looks up current membership live. Reconnect and try again.
Removing DDL Expander
In Integrated apps, select DDL Expander, then Remove app. Removing the add-in does not cancel your subscription. To cancel, see our Terms of Service or contact support.
